← HomeMORTGAGE IN PORTUGAL

Your mortgage document checklist.

A well-prepared file helps a lender understand your situation. The exact list varies by bank, country of residence and income type.

For every applicant

Prepare a valid passport or identity document, Portuguese tax number, proof of address, recent tax return, bank statements and evidence of savings. A credit report or information about existing loans may also be requested. Each applicant needs their own supporting documents.

Evidence of income

Employees usually provide recent payslips and an employment contract or employer statement. Self-employed applicants and business owners may need tax returns, financial statements and current trading evidence. Retirees should prepare pension statements and evidence of payments.

For the chosen property

The bank may request the property tax record, land registry certificate, plans and any signed promissory purchase agreement. Your legal adviser should check the property documentation independently. Foreign documents may require translation or certification.

Share documents carefully

Use the first enquiry to describe your plans. Do not attach identification, account passwords or financial records to an initial message. Your contact will explain the documents needed and the appropriate way to provide them.
