Buying from abroad, one clear step at a time

How to prepare a mortgage while you are still living in another country.

You can begin planning a Portuguese mortgage before you book a viewing trip. An initial conversation about income, existing commitments, savings and your intended purchase helps establish a realistic starting point. It is preparation, rather than a promise of lending.

Give yourself time to organise documents. Overseas income, different currencies and unfamiliar tax forms may require additional explanation. Ask which documents must be translated or certified before paying for those services. A clear checklist helps avoid producing the wrong version.

Much of the mortgage preparation can happen remotely, but every bank has its own identification and signing procedures. Clarify what can be done from home, what needs an appointment and which original documents must be available. Do this before fixing travel dates or making firm promises about completion.

A legal adviser should review the property and purchase commitments. They can also explain whether a power of attorney is appropriate and what it would authorise. Mortgage support does not replace independent legal advice.

Keep the process connected: one contact for financing, clear responsibilities for the other professionals and an agreed view of the next milestone. We help coordinate the mortgage side so you can make decisions with a clearer picture.
